Most certainly as the most lag time for a backup is not the compression,
but the actual time it physically takes to write to the media.  With
tape, compression also means there is less to write.  Speeding up the
tape process in general.  You can also assume this also works with
disk-to-disc backups.

Perhaps high compression will use up more CPU cycles, but that is a
different issue after all.
