John, it's been >10 years since I had to deal with all of this, but I
seem to recall there being some limitation on the MVS side which limited
the logical device connection to 80 columns. I don't recall the specifics,
but perhaps a knowledgable MVS/JES systems person looking at the setup
device info from the NRJE manual should be able to confirm.
As such, we ended-up developing a program for the HP and another for the
MVS side to 'fold' and 'unfold' larger records into multi-80 column records
to pass it back and forth within the 80-column constraint. If I recall,
the first record of the file indicated the attributes of the output file
and how many individual records were unfolded into the larger record. This
process simply became the first job step following the 'include' of the
data in the JCL.
This was easier than playing with the problem via reconfiguring MVS/JES,
doing builds and reboots on the MVS side....especially when these were
only performed once a month in our case..! Also, we could respond to
scenarios more quickly than waiting on the data center folks, thus
making the HP side appear much more responsive to business needs.... :)
