We too have been experiencing problems with FAX/3000 and PCL.  Our problems,
however, are occuring with a much smaller number of pages, albeit, sometimes
complex.  We often encounter the error:
 
  Error: Conversion error (H=0044); Contact STR Software. (FXERR 426)
 
We limit the length of our faxes to around 30 pages max, but this error occurs
even on the first one or two pages.  We use the [MERGE command to download fonts
to the FAX server, and STR has recommended that we cut down the size of this
file or break it into two.  We haven't had time to experiment with this yet.
 
This error, by the way, occurs on more than one type of FAX (i.e., different
fonts, forms, data, etc).  Most of our FAXes are actually PCL output from
WordPerfect for Windows (static documents our customers can request), and this
error has occurred on these as well as the dynamic documents created on the HP.
 
We have just loaded their BETA of version 4.5.  They think it may fix a couple
of other problems we are having, but I don't think it will affect this problem.
