On the one hand, there has been a great explosion of creativity in technology that
is really wonderful.  On the other hand, it is true that the new and improved
graphics and special effects tend to discourage imagination.  This is nothing
new.  The 'vast wasteland' of television is alive and doing well.  It's just that
we tend to get better and better, as a culture, at creating things that discourage
creativity more and more.  If I do nothing but watch images created by others, my
own creativity is starving.  Books are still the best.  The picture in my mind, of
Gandalf from Lord of the Rings will always be better than the mass merchandising
of Gandalf.
