Some off list kibitzing resulted in the following. My unnamed co-conspirator
thought that this was list-worthy. I hope that others agree, but hope even
more that we see something like this, but soon.

Now if we could only HP to try to sell. Have you seen the Lotus Notes R5
commercial? Nice marketing!

I'd settle for a few of those IBM-style commercials, where people are
talking about their technology. Maybe a meeting where you have a room full
of UNIX admins, all to keep one application on one system up and running,
and unable to agree on how, all arguing and talking at once. Then the
attention turns to the one guy, who gets asked, What do you do? HP 3000
System Manager. Who handles security? I do. So who admins the box? Me.
Where's your DBA? Uh, that's me, too. And what application does your system
run again? We run Payroll. And web ordering. And inventory, and its data
warehouse. And Email. And EDI. And what is your role in this meeting?
Helping you guys try to replace one of my applications with your solution...
So, your system isn't going to be Y2K compliant? No, it has been for months.
But it can't handle our current volume? No, we've been able to scale up to
stay ahead of projected growth, and have done so, on budget and ahead of
schedule. But you won't be able to meet future growth, right? No, we can
meet or exceed projected growth for the next five years, which is as far
ahead as anyone has planned. So, why are we trying to replace your
application? I can't think of a reason.

The whole is more than the sum of its parts.
