Your best choice may be to simply purchase a 220V/110VAC stepdown transformer
and run your console (and any other critical 110V peripherals) permanently
off of the transformer. To do this, you would connect the high side of the
transformer to the 220V output terminals of the UPS, along with the HP3000.
You would connect the console to the low side of the transformer -- thus
avoiding altogether the 110V tap-to-ground connection that you've currently
found to work. Switchovers from line to internally generated AC voltage would
then be transparent.

Doing this is a power wasting maneuver (low voltage transformers are
notoriously inefficient), but it seems to be your only choice.
