There are several tools that work on both operating systems mentioned, one
of which is Hiback. The main problem is file format and metafile
information transfer. For example, on MPE a backup tool is concerned with
storing files of various types emanating from groups within accounts within
volumesets. The metafile information deals with filecodes, dates, creator,
restrictions, extents, userlabels, block size, record size and other
information which are unique to MPE.

On NT the files emanate from directories within directories within
directories, etc. The metafile information deals with file size in bytes,
dates, access control lists and other things unique to NT.

The same scenario with different players for UNIX.

A utility designed to restore MPE files to an MPE system needs all this
information in order to recreate an exact copy of the file back onto the
original system or another MPE system. The same is true for NT, UNIX and
others.

The big problem for cross system restores comes with dealing with the
metafile information. How will Hiback, for example, restore an IMAGE
database onto an NT server? How about a KSAM file? What will MPE think of
an NT file with an exe or even a txt extension?

I guess it should be possible to try and execute some mapping or ask as the
files are restored or perhaps just restore plain old text files, but why
bother? You can transfer the files under your control via FTP and other
tools.

Kind regards,

Denys. . .

This will be very difficult, since the only tool on the HP 3000 that
*might*
also exist on other systems is "tar". Try using "tar" in the posix shell on
your 3000 to make a tar tape.

When moving files between *any* two operating systems, the trick is finding
a
tool that works on both of them.
