Good Morning John,

The BUSY in the DSTAT all, is a timeout in the SCSI command. DSTAT expects the devices to respond in a specific time frame. When it doesn't, the DSTAT shows busy.

Since you can see the build status, I am assuming you have access to the Grid Manager console. The Grid Manger is the console for the Mod20. You will need to plug a serial cable into the SPA or SPB 25 pin connector on the back right (when looking from the back).

You mention the lights on the drives are good, is the service light green? (upper left hand corner). Did you check the lights on the controllers themselves? You may need to open the back (oven) style door. Take a quick peek and close it, the system will automatically shut down if you leave the door open for 2 minutes.

Finally have you checked the logs in the Grid Manager? There are 2 IIRC, FRC and system logs. Check them both.

  HTH,

  -Craig

  Fellow listers,

Over the weekend three of the LDEVs in a model 20 disc array showed BUSY when I did a DSTAT listing but it wasn't always three, sometimes only two showed BUSY. And the I/O to the volume set on the arrays appeared to be hung or the datasets were not accessable as several report jobs and a backup had been hung for hours. All problem drives were on the same service processer in the array. However, there were no error lights on any of the drives. At least three mirror pairs of discs appeared to be rebuilding.
After a start no recovery, the problem discs were back on line and I was able to restart and complete all jobs. Note this was the first system restart in 11 1/2 months. This morning everything seems okay except that the drives are showing only a 52% rebuild.
Has anyone seen this problem before and found out what it was?
