uuencode won't help either. FTP in 8-bit mode transports the binary data
exactly from one site to another. uuencode is just another way of transport-
ing binary data (over a 7-bit channel though). Both get you an exact copy
of a file on two systems...
Your problem is that you *need* a different version of the file on the
different systems. The character code for some accented-characters in the
HP Roman8 set is a *different* code than in the character set used by other
platforms (like windows). If you want to see the same representation on
both systems (i.e. in two different character sets) you have to translate
the codes before you transfer them. This is beyond the capability of most
ftp programs. Ftp is not typically aware of the character-set requirement
for various systems. Apparently WRQ's reflection client is, since the folks
at WRQ have obviously had alot of experience translating character sets
between terminal/termulators and local PCs over the years.
The only choices you have that I can think of:
1) figure out a way to use the wrq ftp, or
2) find or write a program that translates the special characters in a file
between the HP Roman8 version and the windows character set (ISO8859?)
and run this program on a copy of the file before you FTP it.
(I don't know of such a program offhand.. I know we had to write something
similar to do this for MIME e-mail messages which are sent in ISO-8859
character set but need to be displayed on HP terminals/termulators in
HP Roman8.)
