For those of you lucky enough to be using the Mac OS, this task is trivial.
The Mac OS supports something called "Folder Actions", whereby a folder
(directory) is configured so that almost any conceivable action can be
invoked (via Apple Events, something akin to Windows' OLE) as soon as an
object appears in that folder.

Obviously, this will be of limited use to most readers, but it's worth
mentioning, for the record...
