If the file exists on the system, run fscheck for a bad label. If that's the case, purge it and then do the restore.

Was this straight store/restore or a third party backup like Backpack?
Check the backup list and see if the file you're trying to restore is there. I've been away from the 3000 for some years now but it sounds like the file is in the directory but not on the tape.
If you're using a Dat clean it and try restoring again.
