Hello Fellow Listers...

The Javelin/QWEBS demo response has been wonderful, but not without a few
glitches...

We've had several hundred hits, and it's not even been 24 hours yet! And
they say the 3000 is dead - HAH! Many of you actually logged on. Some
have had problems, mostly due to either my lack of being really specific
on the browser, or the fact that people accessing it need to give the Java
Applet a chance to download and start.

I also had to abort several people, one of which was clearly attempting to
hack the system.

With this, some information and one ground rule...

- I posted this as a public service, to show HP3000 users that their
HP3000s are more than just green-screen, application boxes, and to show
that the HP3000 can compete in the internet world and serves up Java
applets, without an NT box. Precautions were taken because there is the
one idiot who wants to hack around, but if I catch them, they will be
aborted without warning. Try to keep your time online to under a couple
of minutes, do not attempt to even log onto another account than that
provided (DEMO.MSQSS), and stay away from the OP, SM, AM and PM commands
(which don't work anyway in this account) - these are clear indicators and
will start me looking at what you're doing. I respect and trust our
HP3000 users - please respect this HP3000.

- As for browsers, I've been asked "...why only MSIE 3.02, build 1300 or
higher, or MSIE 4.0?" The reason is that the Java Applet is digitally
signed, and thus, requires Authenticode support in the browser. The
version you would need is freely downloadable from the Microsoft website,
as is an Authenticode update to existing versions. We will not post
unsigned Java applets for your protection, and ours. MiniSoft has said
(via their written docs to me) that Netscape Object Signing will be coming
soon.

- Please give the applet time to download, especially if using a dial-up
PPP connection. This applet is about 64K in size, but encompasses all of
the classes needed for terminal emulation and NS/VT. Because it is a
signed applet, you may need to give it a little more time to authenticate
- depending on the speed of your system. If a "certificate" dialog pops
up - and will by default, reply YES to this, or the applet will be
discarded and will not run. I can assure you that the applet is cool -
there is no funny business in there.

- If you get the MPE/iX prompt (it comes up twice), and if on a slow
connection, it may take up to a minute to be able to start typing. Again,
give it some time - up to a minute for the first download. Jim Trudeau
did get it working, but it took some wait time. Also - there is no
cursor, so just start typing the logon command.

Should you have any questions, please feel free to e-mail me directly.
The feedback is great and I appreciate it a lot.

Best Regards,
Joe
