John Abbott College has most of its major databases resident on an
HP3000/928 (MPE/ix 5.0). In the near future, we will be required to
transmit/receive student registration information to/from our provincial
Department of Education's IBM mainframe via the Internet using FTP. No
problem so far: we intend to link the HP to our Internet (Linux) server and
use the smarts which came with 5.0.
However, the Dept. of Education has chosen to impose VIACRYPT PGP as its
standard software for data encryption purposes. This software is available
for HP9000's (Unix), VAX's, MS-DOS machines etc. but there is no MPE version
nor any plans on behalf of VIACRYPT to create such a version.
Given this situation, does anyone have any ideas how we can proceed?
Encryption is required and migration from the HP3000 to another machine
would be unimaginable given 25 years of development under MPE.
It has been suggested that we download the files to be transmitted to an
MS-DOS machine and run them thru the encrtyption software there: we believe
this would involve a lot of manual intervention we'd like to avoid. Possibly
another solution would be to run the encryption software on the server but
I'm not sure that would work.
Ideas would be welcomed. TIA
Regards, Eric Bender
