Denys makes some very valid points here,

Anything read in Computerworld is suspect at best. Denys and I both have
had experiences of being quoted here - much to our chagrin. I don't
subscribe to it, refuse to subscribe to it until their editorial content and
policies are raised to the level where accurate quoting and reporting shows.
Anything from Framingham, MA which says "Please RSVP..." on the envelope
goes immediately into the circular file.

All of these issues - and Denys covered them quite well here, so no need to
repeat them - were slanted by ComputerWorld. Denys and I both have NT 4.0
running - I have two servers on 4.0 SP3 and one on 5.0 B2. I did have to
apply hotfixes on one of these servers (it IS the firewall) - the other is
behind the firewall. BTW - a Hotfix is a Patch - and we all know about
patches, right? It happens that this type of patch is one that can be
applied immediately, and may (or may not) require a reboot (just like our
beloved MPE).

As for adding disk - I just left a customer site where more disk was needed
on their NT server. It's scheduled for this weekend. Why anyone would
bring a system down in the middle of the day for adding disks, and not wait
until a weekend or after hours is crazy (and yes, you do have to do that to
add disk drives - why would anyone not kill power to a system when adding
anything other than a hot-swap device is beyond my comprehension). Again -
more slant, more anti-MS garbage.

I too, will not defend MS here - but I will defend the OS. I have one NT
server that has been running since I brought it up, back in March. It has
not burped yet, and still hums along quite nicely thank you. Does NT have
problems? Sure. So does Unix, so does Mac/OS, and so does MPE, OK? Every
damned OS has patches to fix things. To pick on one is stupid.

If ComputerWorld wants to do a piece like this, why didn't they also publish
the horror stories from the other OSes? Methinks you all know the answer to
that one.

So - the advice here is to read CW if you wish - but remember, what you
read, may be more to steer your mind to a certain direction by slanting the
story, than reporting real fact.

Best Regards,
Joe
