it is 7 track data they need to read at low bpi.
believe it or not they actually made a 7970 that was 7 track at one time...
owned one only saw one... sold one eons ago when I had the computer exchange
inc.... wish I had kept that one!

Ask NASA or JPL. Last time I heard they had tons of satellite data from
missions they still haven't read due to lack of equipment or time.
(However it's probably 7-track tape instead of 9-track.)
