Hello, Steve.

I doubt you'll remember, but I was on the HP3000-L mailing list for awhile,
which is where I got your address. Hope you'll forgive the intrusion.

I have a question for you that isn't really HP3K-related.

I have been trying to send email to a military node named
pentagon-gw1.army.mil, and it keeps bouncing back to compuserve with
"SERVER RECEIVED WINSOCK ERROR CONNECTION REFUSED".

I retired from the Army in 1988, long before PC-based email was widely used
in DOD, so am not at all up to speed on the security issues.

My question is, do military servers have a selective firewall or some other
form of security that prevents commercial or civilian email addresses from
getting through? Obviously, if you get this, not all servers are so
protected, but one nevers knows.

The server I'm trying to reach is at the Puzzle Palace, but I've
encountered the same problem with one of the servers located at Fort Lewis,
Washington.

What exactly is the system trying to tell me? Got any ideas? I'd
appreciate any advise you feel comfortable giving.

Bob Graham
