having a hard time finding any databases that are one drive 1. I think
that most of my problems come from loading on samba and odbclink/se. But
they are mostly in the posix name spaces and I can't find out what drive
they are on.

Tracy Johnson makes an excellent point about the use of NOT1 class name.

So, to move files OFF ldev1, simply store some fileset, then restore with
the ;dev=not1 option.

Works fine with MPE-named or posix-named fileset.

As Bill Lancaster pointed out, you do run the risk of moving some
ldev1-required system files off of ldev1.

To solve this potential problem (more on that later) you could simply
create an SLT tape and UPDATE from it.

Whether or not a problem is created by moving files off ldev1 is debateable.

I have recently intentionally placed such a file, NMCONFIG.PUB.SYS
intentionally on ldev 2. A subsequent "start norecovery" worked without
incident.

I suppose, in that case a "start norecovery single-disk" would be
problematic - haven't tried it.

In any case, creating a new SLT and updating from it (or simply updating
from a recent unmodified SLT) should correct any problems associated with
system files straying off ldev 1.

One final point. I prefer to have at least 60000 contiguous free sectors on
ldev 1 prior to any update. Current versions of MPE/iX are supposed to warn
you if you do not have enough free space on ldev 1 to perfrom an update.
At least, I believe you are warned - I have never tried to tempt faith in
this regard. If I ever do have the opportunity to test it out, I'll let you
know.
