We have considered COBOL for the long term.  In 1980, COBOL was one of the
best choices available.  It ran on a variety of platforms, there was a large
group of programmers at all skill levels that knew it.  It had a 15-20 year
history.  It was taught in schools.  Good Choice.

Today.  COBOL is a minor language in schools and many have dropped it
completely. Only very experienced programmers use it, very few new
programmers can use it.  10 years from now, the existing COBOL population
will be in late 40's to early 60's and declining in numbers.  Tough choice
to choose COBOL as your future language.
