Hi Folks ?
Over the past few months, I have had more than a few enjoyable conversations with people regarding the history of the HP3000 computer and things related to it. Wonderful stories, about a time in our past many of us fondly remember when computers did not have ?WIMP? interfaces.

A time when ordinary ? and not so ordinary ? people made computers do things nobody had ever thought of before.
And the HP-3000 computer, and the men and women who made it work, are without any question as important part
of that story, every bit as important as International Business Machines and the ?seven dwarfs? of the computer industry.
(That would be Burroughs, Sperry Rand, Control Data, Honeywell, General Electric, RCA, and NCR for those of you not familiar with the phrase?)

What HP did in the business world with the 3000 series computer is amazing ? they turned around and did things
many people thought impossible. In a lot of cases, nobody bothered to tell them the things they wanted to do
were impossible to do. HP people just went ahead and did it. That is one of the founding notes of HP, and still
reverberates though the company today.

So, given all this, I want to do something to preserve these stories, and make them available to other people to enjoy
and marvel at. In January of 2009, I plan to launch a new project that will be aimed at doing that just that. The goals will
be conservation and preservation of the histories and stories that surround the HP-3000 computer and related
items of interest, such as the MPE operating system.

This will be a not-for-profit projected, funded primarily out of my ?beer money? funds. I don?t expect it will ever even
be self supporting ? and that is okay.

But, most of you folks are the ones with the stories ? so I come asking you to share those stories with me. They
will be published on the web site, along with credit to you ? unless you ask for the accreditation to be anonymous.

Those of you willing to share stories, graphics, photo?s, and memories, can be a part of this. I have setup three
ways you can share at the moment:

_______________________________________________________________________
1.
You can write up something and e-mail it to me. This will get lightly edited, and then formatted for inclusion on the web site. Please be sure to include your accreditation, including a copyright notice. Original materials and materials in the public domain are welcome. E-mail to be at [log in to unmask]

2.
You can send me a historical photo, along with a short description. This will be included in a photo gallery.
If you send a photo to be included in a story you wrote, be sure to let us know about it, so we can format and
include it in your story!

Email photos to: [log in to unmask]

They will be available for immediate review at: http://gallery.me.com/paul.raulerson#100012
You can also upload photos directly from the website.

Be sure to include a comment in the subject line when you e-mail pictures, or send me a separate
e-mail describing the picture.

3.
We can schedule a phone interview, which will be recorded and posted as a podcast. You can
tell everyone a story in your own voice! Alternately, you may grant a voice or A/V interview that will
be edited and posted as part of an essay by my or another volunteer.

Interviews will be conducted over a Skype connection, so this is available to folks outside the U.S.
Send me an e-mail with a schedule request and a brief outline of what you would like to talk
about please. (send to: [log in to unmask])

*I only speak English, by the way. If you don?t, it make take a little while to arrange for a translation services.

Obviously, there is little or no budget available to scan items in. Scanning will be doable if it is only a
page or two, and you include the return postage. Large scan jobs are not doable, at least not by me.

Please send a couple lines like the paragraph below with your materials. Should anyone be interested
in using any of your material commercially, we will direct them to contact you directly to negotiate rights.

Sample Rights Paragraph.

This work is copyright 2008 by John Smith. Permission is hereby given for Paul Raulerson to
publish this material, with non-exclusive electronic only rights, in conjunction with a project to preserve
and conserve the history of the HP3000 computer and related systems. All other uses are prohibited
without the express, written, permission of the copyright holder.

In any event, I hope everyone will enjoy this, and that many people will feel free to
volunteer to share their memories, stories, photos, and dreams with us.

Yours,
-Paul Raulerson
