to move the 'sysstart file must be on ldev 1' from myth to near fact
(:-)....this is from the system startup manual:
http://docs.hp.com/mpeix/onlinedocs/32650-90855/32650-90855.html
The SYSSTART file must be created by MANAGER.SYS and needs to reside on LDEV 1
to function properly. Once the file is created, use the following commands to
copy the file to the appropriate location:
HELLO MANAGER.SYS
FILE SYSSTART;DEV=1
FCOPY FROM=tempfilename;TO=*SYSSTART;NEW
If an error exists in the SYSSTART file, the startup process ignores it and
continues execution.
=====================
there's no explanation about *why* it needs to reside on ldev 1....and i think
we have sufficient evidence to say that in fact as long as it resides on the
system volume you're ok. this assertion may be a carry over from an older
version of mpe.

that should take care of it. for the mildly curious, here's the indirect
statement i use for creating slt's:
/SYS/ - /SYS/MPEXL/DUMPAREA - /SYS/PUB/NL - /SYS/PUB/SL,/TELESUP/;DIRECTORY
(thanks, stan :-)
here's a question.... in sysgen, if all that you say is 'tape', what actually
goes onto your slt? (i'm prepping everyone for the system manager certification
test :-)

but it's under an 'if'. if the 'if' is false, the copy/build/fcopy won't
happen. - d
