I unfortunately now have an ex-client in manufacturing who has
successfully done the complete switch "soup to nuts" from an HP3000 to
Oracle in under 9 months.

I suggest that as normal it is the quality of the team doing the work
that has the biggest impact on time scales and implementation success
rather than the quality of any chosen solution.

Whilst I firmly believe in the strengths of the 3K, I wonder if in some
part its great reliability reputation is based upon the people who have
chosen it. Many of the people one meets in the 3K community are very
very good at what they do.

Or is it the other way round, does working with a 3K teach one good
practice?

Anyway to counteract the bad news, here's some good news:

Another One Back from the Dust?

An HP3000 site in UK has just abandoned plans to switch over to Big Blue
in September and is now undergoing a rapid Y2K conversion on its 3K
apps. It felt more assured of the success of this approach even at this
late stage than continuing with the transfer.
