Sometime after 01:55 on 2018-Jan-08 the HP3000-918LX suffered a system
abort after completing a STORE full back up to tape. The console
displayed the following:

. . .
01:54/#J213/28/From OPERATOR.BACKUPS/Full system backup JOB COMPLETED
01:54/#J213/82/LOG OFF ON LDEV #10

SYSTEM ABORT F1458 SUBSYSTEM 102
SECONDARY STATUS: INFO=-1,SUBSYS=111
SYSTEM HALT 7,$05B2

The status line on the console displayed the following series of codes
in an endless cycle:

DEAD
BF07
0105
02B2
DEAD

This is the second time in two weeks that we have experienced a system
halt during our weekend backups. Both are identical saving for the
secondary status report. And both times the same DDS3 tape cartridge
was involved. In fact, I deliberately reused that cartridge in order
to test whether or not there might be a cause and effect relationship.

The significant difference between this time and the first is that the
backup completed and then the system halted. The other difference is
that using : <ctrl>B, CM> RS caused the system to reset but it would
not boot. The self test phase passed without issue and the IPL
autobooted as expected bu the boot process simply did not go past the
booting . . .
message. I did this twice with the same results. In the end I
powered down the HP3000-918LX and restarted from the power off
condition. I also specified the boot path (> BOOT PRI) while
interacting with the IPL.

The system then completed the boot process as usual.

Has anyone any clue as to what is going on with our 918?
