Spare BOT/EOT markers are one of the few things we made sure we kept
track of when we started moving away from 9 track drives some years ago.

If you cut out the first few feet of a 9 track tape, the rest of the data
is still recoverable (with a little work).

If you cut out the first few feet of a DDS tape, the rest of the data
isn't recoverable without a lot of *very expensive* hard work.
