SPECIAL FOCUS: Enterprise Software Failures

TODAY'S INTERNET INSIGHT: We all know about the problems at Enron,
WorldCom, and Andersen. In each case, financial problems of the most
drastic sort have brought these companies to their knees. But what
about Nike, Siemens, and Agilent? What do these three have in common?

All have blamed major problems with supply-chain or ERP
implementations with causing major business shortcomings. For
instance, Agilent this week said a faulty Oracle ERP deployment caused
it to lose out on $105 million in revenues in its most recent quarter.

That's an IT disaster. We've been tracking these supply-chain woes for
some time and have learned a thing or two about what causes such
problems -- and how to avoid them.

Why Big-Time Software Projects Fail -- And The Price To Be Paid

Agilent is just the latest example of a company whose big software
project went awry. The company says things are now on track, but its
experience is a powerful reminder of the risks inherent in major IT
initiatives. --Tom Smith
