Thanks for all the suggestions. The solution is interesting.

I'd gotten a little sloppy in my management of this box (Apache had been
running for 112 days) and noticed that the log files were on the large size
(access_log was over 5MB). So, just for grins, I killed the Apache job,
renamed the two log files and re-started Apache. Voila! Glance is now
reporting a quiet system - as it should. Weird that large log files would
cause the bizarre behavior Glance was reporting - but there you have it.
