It's been three or four years since I've travelled to India so things could
have changed.  The departure process started with having your checked
luggage x-rayed and a strap affixed so you couldn't open the case without
breaking the strap.  You were told that anything with batteries must be in
your checked luggage.  I couldn't even take my 35MM camera with me since it
had a battery for the light meter.  While having the carryon luggage
x-rayed, the passengers were separated by sex and went through a privacy
area where you emptied your pockets and were given a thorough pat-down search.

Some of you probably have been to India more recently than I have and can
report whether such strict security measures were in force prior to this week.
