SHORT SUMMARY: It seems to work. Post-patch, we no
longer get 3000 FTP server 60 second timeout when doing
large file transfers via the Internet when the net is busy.

SLIGHTLY LONGER SUMMARY:

Received and installed 5.0 pull release FTP patch for long
pause timeout problem. Patch number is: FTPDDJ6A.
It brings the FTP revision up to: A000700D (which is kind
of a strange software revision number format.......).

Did a couple test transfers of 5+MByte file from HP9000
client in Colorado to our HP3000 here in Seattle, WA area.
Even when Internet was busy, no more 60 second FTP
server timeout problem. Since the 60 second parameter
was hard wired in 3000 FTP server, and patch was to take
out that timeout, results as expected so far.

One small unexplained startup problem: When first tried
test sequence, 3000 would not allow FTP logon from remote
client, even though FTP OPEN worked fine. Same results
trying to logon after FTP OPEN to our own 3000 (loop test).
Late last night PICS-Australia finally helped me figure out
that ABORTing FTPMON,FTP.SYS and then re-STREAMing
JFTPSTRT.ARPA.SYS made everything well. PICS has had
other cases where apparently if FTPMON job gets cranked
up before NETCONTROL START and NSCONTROL START
completely finish their startup sequences, something gets
hosed up and result is you get unsuccessful login attempt
messages when enter user name.account and password
from FTP client. BUT: Our timestamps showed that our
NS should have been running before the FTPMON
job kicked off. Stopped and started NS and FTPMON job
again, and problem did not come back......... ????........ No
more time to investigate right now; added some time in
command files between NSCONTROL START and launch
of FTPMON job, and hope problem does not come back.....

Thanks to the people at the CSY Networking lab for their
efforts on this one.
