First decide if you want JDBC or another Java technology.  JDBC came
with FOS in 6.0 I think.  You can also buy commerical versions from MB
Foster or Minisoft.

Non-JDBC Java technogy would be Mike Yawns TurboImage class (might be
on the Interex site) or Adager Database Connectivity (ADBC) from
Advance Network Systems.

Jon Diercks wrote a paper for a Sol Symp a couple of years ago that
talked about using JDBC with Enhydra.  All you would be interested in
is the connection part.
