This is Kirk Whelan at SMM here in the UK. He's using Turnpike software
for Mail and News as part of the Internet suite provided by his (and
our) ISP, Demon.

At a guess, he's on HP3000-L rather than comp.sys.hp.mpe (right Kirk?)

If you have Return-Receipt-To set on in an Email you send him, his copy
of Turnpike will reply to you. It will use the name Turnpike_Mail_Server
because it is *it*, not him, that is replying, and it will use the host-
name not the domain name, as it is the host, not the domain, that is
replying.

They seem to be out of sync with what you post, because it needs to go
from you to the list, and from the list to Demon, and for Kirk to logon
and download, before the RRT can start its journey back to you, which
will take a further variable length of time. But it's one for one with
your HP3000-L postings.

However, I am not at all sure that the Listserver should be passing the
Return-Receipt-To through in the headers when it converts James' posting
into the myriad Emails that it sends to subscribers.

So, a question for Jeff Kell:
****************************
Is this right? Surely the Return-Receipt-To that James is using should
(maybe) spark a reply from the Listserver, but then go no further, being
stripped out completely?

Turnpike allows you to set up a pseudo-news group from list mailings,
(Kirk, have you done this, or are you receiving as Emails?)
which has the advantage that threading, etc, can be supported.

But I imagine that the point at which the Return-Receipt-To is handled
is well before the filing of the Email is handled, and I doubt if the
RFCs would allow it to be ignored anyway.

Fortunately for James, we read his postings via comp.sys.hp.mpe, or
*our* copy of Turnpike would be adding its quota of Return-Receipts, one
per HP3000-L posting.......
