We can only guess, but I can offer two explanations: (1) HP is running out
of 9xx numbers, and (2) this naming convention somewhat mirrors the names of
the equivalent 9000's.

Subject: A500? What happened to 9XX

Change that 5 to a 4 and all of our servers will turn blue. I know I
haven't ordered hardware in awhile, but it hasn't been that long. What
happened to the old naming convention? Is IBM making HP hardware now;-)
