Dave,
If you are simply trying to examine the contents of a message file using the
PRINT command, for example, you can use the CI's COPY command to create a
copy of the message file. This doesn't actually do a record-by-record read
the way FCOPY does, so the original file is preserved. You can then print
the copy.

Check the intrinsics manual for FCONTROL. There is a parm that set a read
of a message file to be non-destructive.
