I am not sure what version you are running. It looks like the banner says
Mirvutil. Is VOLUTIL pointing at another utility? I tried it on our 957
recently updated to 6.0 PP 2. I got an older copyright date than yours but
newer version. I also just used it a couple of weeks ago to allow for some
patches and to try to get Apache running. Still trying on that with 3
weeks help from HP.

Subject: [HP3000-L] What happened to contigvol?

        Hi all,

I need to put some patches onto our 925 system, and somewhere along
the
line the precious 180,000 contiguous sectors on ldev 1 that I save
for
this purpose got split. There's plenty of free space on the drive,
including one chunk that's 140,000 sectors.

I *thought* there was a CONTIGVOL command in VOLUTIL that would
condense
freespace, and a quick check of the archives confirms this. There's
even
a reference to it in HP's education documents, and documentation for
it
in the MPE/iX 5.0 Communicator. But there's no such command in *my*
copy
of VOLUTIL. And it's not in the online MPE/iX 6.0 or 6.5 docs.

        >volutil: contigvol

        >*Error: Unrecognized command. (shell 7)
        >volutil:

So, did it disappear along the way? Is there a replacement? The
SHOWUSAGE
command, which seems to be intended for the same purpose, gives me
"An
unexpected error was returned from directory services.(volutil 32"
when I
try to use it. (The error is returned immediately after the command
summary is printed.) So that's no help either.

Is there any way to avoid a reload? The DDS drives on this system
are
9-10 years old. They seem to work well enough for the occasional
restore
of a file or two, but I *really* don't want to try to restore the
entire
        system.

        -- Bruce
