Tom,

From my experience a few years ago:

Multitech - yes (but pricey)
Practical Modems (Hayes subsidiary) - no
Supra - (mostly *)

* There was one run a few years ago that did not agree with newer DTCs.
The message a couple of days ago about the bad cable reminded me of the
problem. It appeared that the chips used in the Supra would allow enough
current to trip the self test mode of the DTC as it was powering up. The TI
chips HP used decided that it must have been a shorted cable and would
disable the port. The problem occurred if the modem was on or off. The
same model produced earlier and later worked fine. A patch of about a
dozen we purchased had this problem. Most were relocated to older DTCs or
used on PCs. The rest I got to work by adding a couple of small resisters
in-line with (I think) modem pins 4 and 20.

In summary, if the port shows bad; try restarting the DTC with the modem
cable disconnected.
