Well, yes.  But I can just as easily loop fetching a file via ftp
and then test for its local existence following the transfer.

I would rather use the Linux file system to do this instead because
then I have a much greater range of options available on the Linux
side should I decide to alter the implementation somewhat in the
future.  I do this already with sftp over ssh to an external site
that will not give us either an ssh or rsync connection.  But either
MPEiX or curlftpfs differs.
