I am not an attorney, either, but I am somewhat picky about copyrights
(because of my freelance work and protection of my private writings which
appear on the web) and copyright laws - especially since they are so vague
when it comes to the internet and electronic media. It is not simply enough
to write something for it to be "copyrighted". It must be published (yes,
the internet counts as do internal corporate documents) and you must "claim"
the copyright. That is to say, you must state that it is copyrighted
material. If there is a dispute as to authorship, whoever (and I literally
mean whoever) applies to the copyright office first will be awarded the
copyright - unless you can prove (beyond a reasonable doubt) that you were
the original creator of the work. Slogans don't normally count for
copyrightable material unless they have been or are intended to be used as
part of a larger purpose (such as a corporate marketing brochure). "Where's
the beef?" was copyrightable because it was generated as a part of an ad
campaign. The statement in question would not be (at this juncture) unless
you intend it to be used in a personal book of quotations & meditations or
in some sort of ad campaign (jingle!), etc.
