Sorry this ISN'T an answer to your question, but since we all learn from
other peoples mistakes, I thought I'd pass it on.
    We were faced with a similar situation awhile ago, and we actually set
up a small IMAGE set containing the relevant printer parameters for each
user LDEV. This worked fine as we had serial connections to a DTC and  knew
what type of printer was attached to any particular LDEV . When we switched
to VT sessions and networked access we had to re-write the printer
parameters and options code, as LDEVs are now assigned at logon and are not
"permanent". This is just something that you should consider, if VT
sessions are in the near future for you....
