The system was backing up to tape as shown in the original post. I
suspected the DDS3 unit from the outset but did not wish to influence
the advice to be offered. I have had problems with HP3000 system halts
relating to these units on other machines in the past. I am not sure
why a hardware problem on an intermittently used peripheral should
bring down the entire system, but it has in the past. Albeit not
recently.
