Thanks for all the responses. I'm afraid I have to eat my own words. I
tried loading the DDS-1 tape in question on the DDS-2 tape drive and it
loaded just fine and I was able to restore the tape. So perhaps the
tape was created on the DDS-2 tape drive which I think is compressed? I
am still mystified as to what happened, but I got my files and created a
new backup tape, so all's well that ends well. Thanks again.
