The 929KS and 969KS machines are indeed both in the 330 tier. Although I
don't know the details of this particular situation my guess is that the
upgrade fee quoted was for upgrading an existing PowerHouse tier-based
license (i.e. one based on the relative performance of the machines), rather
than a FOS-based license.
If a supported customer already has a FOS-based license on a 330 machine,
say for 100 users, and upgrades to another tier 330 machine with the same
number of licensed FOS users, then there is no upgrade fee for the
PowerHouse software -- simply an admin fee of about $750 to cover the issue
of new software enable keys and updating of customer records.
Supported customers who currently have a "performance" tier-based license
can trade-in this license against the purchase of a new FOS-based PowerHouse
license. The usual time to do this is when it comes time to upgrade or
replace an existing machine. Of course, they also have the option of staying
with the performance tier-based license if they wish and simply upgrading it
for the upgraded or new machine.
Contact Bob Berry, on 1-800-4-COGNOS ext.2270, for further details or to
discuss the particular situation you find yourself in.
