Hi Barry,

Let me start by saying we are a consulting firm who deal mainly with 4GLs -
Speedware and PowerHouse. We do some COBOL and Supertool. I personally
have used both Speedware and PowerHouse for many years, and am just
starting to learn Supertool.

As in many languages, the programs are only as good as the programmer. All
too often the language gets a bad rap, when really it is the programmer who
doesn't know how to use the language. As hard as it is to believe, I have
seen Quiz out-perform COBOL.

We have written some very large systems, accessing millions of records, in
Speedware and I haven't seen it fall to pieces. I also haven't had to
result in writing pieces in another language.

However to get increased performance, you will probably want to use a TPI
product (if you have any experience with Omnidex, you will find it much
easier to use with Speedware than it is with Quiz). We are currently also
starting to use Supertool as a front end to speed up some of the serial
accesses - although you won't find it to be quite as easy to use as it is
with Quiz.

I will forewarn you, one of the things that you will miss when going from
Quiz to Speedware is the use of subfiles.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any more questions or if I can
be of any help.

Judy
