How can I return status info from a remote session?

I have a job running on system 1 that runs a remote session on system 2.  I'd 
like to return a jcw value that is set by a program on system 2 back to the job 
running on system 1 so that the system 1 job can determine the success of 
the system 2 session.  Is there any good way to do this?
