That method occured to me.

But what happens if a Win95 user tries to create "New_20_Folder" written
exactly like that (i.e. New underscore twenty underscore Folder)?  Will it
be created on the MPE side as "New_20_Folder", but will it only be accessible
on the Win95 side as "New Folder"?

You might need to choose something other than simple underscores to delimit
the hex, something not very likely to occur in normal file names.  Underscores
and numbers can occur frequently on software packages that use the version
number as part of the name.
