As it turns out, they did. IIRC, the 3000/30 and 3000/33 benefitted
from the hardware of the 300. The systems programming language
(which I, too, remember as being SPL II) was also used on the HP 3000
(for COBOL II and VPLUS), so there was some crossover.
I think our own Fred White worked on the development of the 300 for
awhile.
