Alan, thanks for the reply. Also, thanks to everyone else who made replies;
they were all very helpful. Here is what I finally ended up doing:
 
I made the cable as Alan describes above, except that instead of hooking
up a modem directly to the 925LX, I put the DB25 end into one of the
serial ports of one of our Unix boxes. This Unix box has a modem, so
our mother-to-be will be able to dial into the Unix box, and then
get over to the HP from there. I could have just as easily put a modem
at the DB25 end, but this way I don't have to rob a modem, and I have
a permanent way to get sessions on the HP from Unix.
 
However, I wired the cable wrong for a direct link from computer to
computer.  :-}  <sound of hand striking forehead> A null-modem adapter
made for a quick fix.
