 I'm not sure HP 28685B are still available.  However, on those, you need to
have both "SQE Test" and "Link Beat" set to "Enable" or "On".  Then,
"Loopback test" must set to "Disable" or "Off".  As for "Long cable", I
don't remember what was the max cable length before needing it enabled.

As far as I remember, no matter which transceiver brand you use, "SQE Test"
MUST be enabled/on EXCEPT if transceiver is connected to a HUB or Switch AUI
port.  Not doing so on an HP3000 may cause some performance issues.
