From memory :

2 (send data), 3 (receive data) and 7 (ground) are required for asynchronous
terminals/printers.
2 and 3 are straight between a DCE (i.e. mux, DTC, etc) and a DTE (printer,
terminal), crossed-over between 2 DCEs or 2 DTEs.
For synchronous devices (i.e. devices that need/use a clock signal), more
signals are required : 5 (clear to send), 6 (ready to send) and, I believe,
20 (not sure what this one is, perhaps the clock signal itself).

Well, last time I made my own serial cables, Ronald Reagan was still an
actor ... well, not quite, but he was President.

As far as printers are concerned :

- Some printer types (TT18) do NO handshaking at all. No wonder spoolfiles
may be lost !
- Some printers use a hardware handshaking
- Some printers use a software handshaking : X-ON/X-OFF. IIRC, that one goes
thru the data (2 and 3) signals)

All from memory .... After almost a generation, I guess I'll be forgiven a
few memory lapses.

Christian
