George, a few years back, I got the paging to work great on the HP3000, for
aborted jobs, and even system crashes, all at a minimal cost.  I no longer
have
all the technical specs, but you should go to the HP3000-L archives at:
http://raven.utc.edu/archives/hp3000-l.html
and do a search on the keyword "DIGIPAGE", you will find several helpful
discussions describing exactly what you are looking for.
