One real effective way to do this is to use 
' CALL INTRINSIC "QUIT" USING <variable name> '.  It
will abort the entire job.  Use it wherever in the
program you want it to stop if something screws up. 
"Variable name" is an S9(4) comp field, you put
whatever value you want in it and it is displayed on
$STDLIST, to let you know where in the program it
happened, if there is more than one possibility.
