Gilles you are ABSOLUTELY RIGHT!!!!
I will add that maybe... you just might want to do the partial twice???
hehhe just in case you have the tape go bad like happened to me last week :( :(
The CE even asked me to see both the full (from the night before) and the
partial for that day before he would start swapping out my drives !! (this was
done very politely and with a nice comment of "just to make sure this goes
flawlessly")

You did great right up to the part where you replaced the faulty drive.
What you should have done BEFORE that point was to take a partial backup
back to the last full - then replace the drive and follow with an install,
followed by restoration of all files from backup.
You cannot simply replace an existing volume in the system volume set
without later performing an install. MPEX has nothing to do with your
problem. And the response center should have told you that.
