This will only work if STEVE is defined as a valid device class on the system.
Even so, that still wouldn't accomplish what the original poster intended.

The "LP" he's trying to change here is in the FILEDES column, not the DEV
column. DEV in this case is 96, which could indeed be changed with the
command you suggest, but only if a valid ldev number or device class name
is specified. AFAIK, the FILEDES field can't be changed with the SPOOLF
command.

His best bet is probably to copy the original spoolfile to one with the new
name he desires, as someone posted earlier.
